People of Harlem were simply looking to have a good time and do things that were virtually unknown to others. They did and experiences things that would define a generation.
dancing
Dancing was a main form of recreation throughout Harlem and the places that were influenced by the city's renaissance. Dancing went hand-in-hand with jazz. The jazz music could literally be heard from miles away and the music was captivating. Any club, or speakeasy, was never empty. The music, and dancing, was irresistible. One of the most popular clubs was the Cotton Club. Although it was intended for whites, many black entertainers either played music or danced. Many people simply sat back and listened to the music. Rent parties were frequently held, in which homeowners seeking financial assistance would hire a musician or hold a contest to pay their rent. This was simply another excuse to have fun and associate with others. MV
